Share the Fare over the Years…

Feel good flying!

Travelling on Fridays means flying to conquer cancer. That’s because every Friday at Harbour Air is “Share the Fare Friday,” meaning for every Friday passenger flying with us, we’ll donate $1 on your behalf directly to our charity partner of choice, the BC Cancer Foundation.

Did you know…

We’ve been sharing funds directly to BC Cancer since 2019! Through Share the Fare and Harbour Air’s Ride to Conquer Cancer initiatives, to date we have raised over $1,100,000. Each year these funds have gone to a carefully selected in-need project at BC Cancer, resulting in meaningful and lasting impacts in improving cancer outcomes.

A look back on sharing over the past three years…

In 2018, funds were utilized to support the development of a new form of cancer treatment called radionuclide therapy, resulting in a new clinical trial at BC Cancer now being underway for prostate cancer patients.

In 2019, funds targeted a study called LOGIC, helping advance care for patients with GI Cancers. The study involves utilizing a high-tech blood test that can detect find tiny fragments of the cancer’s DNA – called ctDNA – in the patient’s blood and aid in precise treatment decisions and earlier detection to support early detection of recurrence.

And, in 2020 and 2021, Share the Fare funds have been utilized to support the Sorenson Lab at the BC Cancer Research Institute. This lab focuses entirely on childhood cancers and researches the use of highly targeted and innovative immunotherapy treatment options. Harnessing the power of the patients own immune system, immunotherapy can target the cancer with more preciseness, less toxicity, and has proven to be highly effective.

The driving force behind this important initiative is BC Cancer Foundation Board of Director, Alex Blodgett and distinguished scientist Dr. Paul Sorensen. Together, (with their dog, Loki in tow) they took out on a journey called The Circle of Hope – A 375-kilometre hiking, biking and rowing expedition aiming to raise funds to end childhood cancer. With the help of our Share the Fare program, Alex, Paul (and Loki) surpassed their goal of $1,000,000 and raised over $1,145,991 to date! We’re so proud to have been part of this amazing project and together with your help we’re making a difference for families across British Columbia! For more information about this journey follow @circleofhopebc and stay updated about future projects by following @bccancerfoundation on social media!

Showing support to the coastal BC communities who have chosen Harbour Air for over 35 years is what Share the Fare is all about. Thank you for flying with us and helping make a difference in the lives of families across British Columbia.

A Day at the Hangar with Erika Nixon

Meet Erika! Our Maintenance Manager for Harbour Air Aerospace Services (HAAS)! She’s been working in aircraft maintenance since 2002 and says “the years have flown by!” (no pun intended). A fun fact: Erika had the opportunity to board the final flight of Harbour Air’s last Piston Single Otter (C‑GLCP) before it was converted to turbine. “Flying on a piston otter ‑ that was a great experience!” We chatted with Erika about her experience with HAAS, day‑to‑day life, and upcoming projects she and the team are working on! Buckle up and fly into the world of aircraft maintenance at Harbour Air Aerospace Services (HAAS)!

How long have you been working for HAAS?

I started working in the Maintenance department at the beginning of October in 2002. I find it hard to believe, the years have flown by (no pun intended)!

What does an average day look like for you at HAAS?

One of the many great things about working here is that there is no average day! Every day is different. My position is amazing because I get to work with so many departments in the company – maintenance, structures, paint shop, records, QA, engineering, health and safety, flight operations, front counter staff, reservations, marketing, accounting, employment support services, dock operations, IT, Customer Care and air crew, not to mention our valued 3rd party customers. The only constant in each day is that everyone works together to provide the safest and highest quality experience and product for our customers.

What or who got you into aviation?

It was a very fortunate happenstance. I saw an ad in a newspaper for a position in aircraft technical records (yes, looking for jobs in a newspaper was still a thing back then). One of my neighbours worked in flight operations at Harbour Air and asked her about the company ‑ she raved about it. She was also kind enough to offer to drop off my resume and put in a good word for me, and I received an interview! After the interview, I was excited about the position and the company, so I kept phoning to follow up and tell them so. I only got through once – and was given the job! After I had worked there for a few months, they told me that one of the things they liked about me was how keen I appeared about the role. When I asked what they meant, they said “well you called us so many times after the interview”. I was a bit embarrassed… who knew they had call display?

What are the requirements / training for your position?

Prior to working with Harbour Air, I worked in a very safety sensitive environment. I spent a decade working with the Lions Society of BC and oversaw the operation of their biggest service ‑ the three Easter Seals camps in the province. Each year we supported approximately 90 staff members and over 800 clients and it taught me a lot about working with and supporting an amazing team of individuals and campers. Everything aviation specific I learned on the job from the experts here – you couldn’t ask for better teachers (despite their strange obsession with acronyms). Knowledgeable, passionate, and patient!

What do you enjoy the most about working for HAAS?

The people. We are lucky enough to have attracted a crew of highly talented individuals who are experts in their respective fields. Having the opportunity to work alongside and learn from so many coworkers who work in so many different areas of aviation, is simply incredible. Not a day goes by that I don’t learn something from them!

What is your favourite aircraft or livery? And why?

I have a soft spot for the Canada beaver (C‑FFHA) and the Canada Otter (C‑FODH). These were very intricate designs for our paint department to carry out and they did a magnificent job! If I had to pick only one though, I would pick the otter. This is aircraft serial number 3, which makes it the third single otter ever produced, though you can’t tell by looking at her!

What is your favourite past project you got to work on?

Well… this is going to sound boring to some… but I absolutely love researching aircraft records. My favourite projects are ones that allow me to spend time looking through them. This kind of research is like being a historian and a detective all in one. You learn so much about the history of each aircraft that they develop personalities. Seeing entries from the people who cared for them and flew them over the years, seeing what parts of the world they flew in – amazing.

Any aircraft record you found interesting?

They all have a unique and rich history, so it is hard to choose a favourite. Some of these aircraft started out life with the military. Both C‑FJHA and C‑FHAA were in the Royal Canadian Air Force, and C‑FHAD and C‑GEND were in the United States Army and deployed in Vietnam. C‑GOPP started with the US Army, and then it went to Ontario where it was operated by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) – where she received her aircraft ident. If you look at older pictures of this aircraft, you can see the rotating beacon it sported while working with the Police. After working so hard in their military and police service years, I like to imagine that they are happy flying our beautiful coast helping to connect people from so many different communities.

Any new and exciting projects on the go?!

Yes! Our engineering and maintenance departments and our partners at magniX are working hard on the e‑plane of course! And we have been developing a specialized IFD (Individual Floatation Device) for both the Harbour Air fleet and to provide to other floatplane operators. Our maintenance, structures and paint shop are overhauling, maintaining, and refreshing paint on the Harbour Air fleet and our 3rdparty customer aircraft. We have also recently launched an Aerospace Instagram account and Facebook account and it is exciting to see them grow!

Do you have a favourite “Harbour Air Moment”?

It’s hard to pick just one… I did get the opportunity to fly on the flight that our last piston Single Otter (C‑GLCP) took before we converted the aircraft to turbine. Flying on a piston otter ‑ that was a great experience!

Tell us a fun fact about yourself!

I was very young the first time I had the opportunity to fly in a large aircraft. I was so excited for my first flight – it was all I talked about for weeks before it happened. When big day finally came, and we landed and got off the aircraft, I asked my mom how much longer I had to wait before we could fly in an airplane. After some confusion, she finally deduced that I thought we had been on a bus the whole flight, not an aircraft. I am a bit better at identifying aircraft now ‑ at least I don’t confuse them with a ground vehicle!

A Day in Flight Operations with Dave Perry

Meet Dave! World traveller, Lupe’s dad, and Harbour Air’s experienced Flight Operations Manager! He’s been part of the Harbour Family for ten years and says that time have flown by! Between managing a dispatch team, creating pilot and aircraft schedules, coordinating private charters, managing daily flights, all while tap‑dancing with BC’s weather systems…it’s safe to say no day is the same for Dave and his team. Keep reading to learn about Dave and what life is like in Flight Operations!

How long have you been working for Harbour Air?

I hit the 10 year mark this week! I’m very grateful for the time I’ve spent at Harbour Air, it’s been an amazing period spent with incredible people. How does the saying go, time flies when you’re batching tens of thousands of flights?

What’s an average day like in Flight Operations?

I manage a team of 9 dispatchers and charter specialists. In normal times, we can have up to 300 daily flights, so there is always something going on in the office. I am also responsible for the airline’s flight schedule, which eats up a fair bit of time. On top of that I do the pilot schedules, so with Flight Ops included that’s more than 80 employees whose work schedules (and payrolls!) I take care of. They are all on different rotations, with a complex set of training requirements, vacation requests, etc. When I’m deep in the schedules, my brain feels like one of those scenes in murder movies where the detectives have strings tied chaotically all over the room linking different graphs, suspects, etc.

What are the team roles within your department?

In Flight Operations we have four roles:
1. Future/Charter Specialist – this is where any emails or phone calls go for flights that take place after tomorrow.
2. Scheduling – this is where tomorrow’s schedule gets finalized.
3. Dispatching – aka The Hot Seat.
4. Help Desk – this is a floating position designed to assist any of the other positions.

Any favourite “hidden gem” charter destinations?

I think everyone in Flight Ops is pretty familiar with the website for the Clayoquot Wilderness Resort. We all get that distant faraway look in our eye whenever someone books a charter there. It is obscenely beautiful.

What’s the most popular charter destination?

By volume, we do most of our charters to pretty standard destinations. Victoria, Butchart Gardens, Tofino. But in the summer we end up doing quite a few flights up near Desolation Sound. Lots of trips to Sonora Island, Savary Island, etc.

What’s the most unique charter you’ve organized?

I remember taking a few charter calls from a gentleman who works for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, he is basically the Whale Whisperer. He will get a call when there is a whale in distress somewhere on the coast. He then charters a plane to get him as close to the whale as possible. We’ve flown him to the west coast of Vancouver Island on several occasions where he will meet up with a boat that then takes him to the troubled whale. The last time we did this there was a juvenile humpback that got tangled in an old fishing net. When he got back he said that the mission was successful, but that it was pretty challenging cutting the baby free, when the 50 foot long Mom was swimming nearby watching this strange man approach her entangled baby!!

What do you enjoy most about where you work?

Every morning I show up to work with my 4 year old dog Lupe. She starts whining as soon as we enter the building. She is so pumped to be at work. I’ll let her off leash at the bottom of the stairs, and she charges forward like a bull in Pamplona, running frantically to see her people in the dispatch office. She weighs 12 lbs, but I’ve seen her run over adults like a pilot flying through a high‑sensitivity noise abatement zone. So if you’re in the hallway when we show up, please give wide berth.

What’s your favourite Harbour Air moment?

It might be recency bias, but it’s hard to top the first Electric Beaver flight. It was a beautiful morning, the world was watching, and the flight was flawless.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself!

Is this where you’re supposed to drop a subtle humble brag? Well (clears throat), if I must, (long, pretentious pause), I’ve been to 100 countries. It was easy enough to accomplish after I made the decision to retire in my 20s. Perhaps not the greatest financial decision of my life – I won’t be able to retire again until I’m 80 – but you only live once.

Harbour Air, magniX and H55 Partner for The World’s First Certified All Electric Commercial Airplane

The largest seaplane airline operator, the global leader in electric propulsion technology, and the renowned electric system and  battery storage provider, join forces in bringing aviation to a new era: clean, CO2 free and commercially attractive through electric propulsion.

Vancouver, B.C., Everett, WA, and Sion, Switzerland – April 20, 2021 – Harbour Air, North America’s largest seaplane airline; magniX the company powering the electric aviation revolution; and H55, the spin off from Solar Impulse, producing highly efficient certified battery packs, announced a partnership to certify the world’s first electric Beaver (eBeaver) commuter airplane through a supplemental type certificate (STC) program.

The companies will collaborate together with Transport Canada to certify the installation of the magniX electric propulsion unit and the H55 enhanced battery system, transforming Harbour Air’s seaplanes into an all-electric commercial fleet.

After the successful first flight of the Harbour Air eBeaver powered by magniX in December 2019 and the ongoing flight tests since then, the companies have teamed up with H55 to bring their shared vision of clean, efficient and quiet commercial aviation to life by 2022. H55 will provide its proven modular battery technology to expand the eBeaver’s balance to weight ratio and endurance. The company’s battery modules have one of the highest energy densities on the market and will provide the entire energy storage system and redundant battery monitoring at the cell level for the eBeaver.

André Borschberg, H55 Executive Chairman, commenting on the partnership, “we have been attracted by Harbour Air and magniX’s vision, pioneering spirit and commitment to make aviation clean. The collaboration will leverage our synergies and complementarities. We all understand that the path to electric aviation is complicated. But at the same time by joining forces, our combined experience will lead to quicker certification. And this in turn will offer a fast and safe way to reach the market and popularize electric aviation.”

“I believe that H55 is the leading company in aviation battery solutions,” says Greg McDougall, CEO of Harbour Air. “Having them as partners in the ePlane development means that we will be able to lead the global push for electric aviation.”

“This partnership is another step forward in our vision of making emission free, all-electric aircraft a reality,” said Roei Ganzarski, CEO of magniX. “With Harbour Air leading the way to become an all-electric airline, H55’s battery technology and magniX’s flight-proven propulsion, we are looking at an electrifying future.”

Since the first flight in 2019, the eBeaver has performed additional flight tests to measure and collect data on cruise performance and take-off thrust efficiency, electro-magnetic interference (EMI), battery management software logic, noise levels, and more. magniX, Harbour Air and H55 will work on design optimization for the electric propulsion unit (EPU), energy storage system (ESS) and related aircraft systems based on ongoing flight testing.

Long Beach is a great spot even on a gray, misty day, just pack your rainboots and and jacket instead.

Goose Spit – Comox

Nestled on the southern side of the Comox Valley lies a flexible and sandy curved landform fed by Willemar Bluffs and Gartley Point. The tranquil sandy peninsula in between is Goose Spit Park. Travel Tip: Thinking about bringing your furry four-legged friend? Between March to May of every year, Brant geese use the park as a migratory stopover. During those times, leashing of pets is mandatory in the park.
